Medical condition UAG-02-019

Your visual observer has a hearing impairment that makes voice radio unreliable for him. According to AC 107-2A, how should you handle this?

Show the answer

The answer is B: Set up another effective way to communicate, such as sign language

Part 107 requires the remote PIC, the person manipulating the controls and the VO to communicate effectively. AC 107-2A says that when a hearing or speaking impairment would get in the way, the remote PIC must use an alternative means of effective communication, and gives sign language as an example. The impairment does not automatically disqualify the VO, but seeing the drone alone is not enough.

Careless or reckless operation UAG-02-027

Section 107.23 prohibits operating a small UAS in a careless or reckless manner so as to do what?

Show the answer

The answer is C: Endanger the life or property of another

The rule's test is whether careless or reckless flying endangers the life or property of another. Annoying neighbours or breaking a local noise ordinance may be a problem under other laws, but it is not what 107.23 defines as hazardous operation.

Dropping objects UAG-02-030

A festival promoter asks you to release a shower of small wrapped prizes from your drone over the crowd in front of the stage. What does Part 107 say?

Show the answer

The answer is A: No; drops onto a crowd create an undue hazard to people

Section 107.23 prohibits dropping an object in a manner that creates an undue hazard to persons or property, and falling objects over a crowd are that hazard. Securing the load matters before release, but it does not make the drop itself safe, and no weight allowance exists in the dropping rule.

Visual line of sight UAG-02-053

During a solo orchard survey, the drone drifts behind a tall tree line and you lose sight of it, although the video feed still works. What does AC 107-2A say you should do?

Show the answer

The answer is A: Regain VLOS as soon as practicable, or use your lost-VLOS procedure

AC 107-2A says a pilot who loses VLOS must regain it as soon as practicable, and if that is not possible, follow pre-determined procedures such as landing, hovering or returning home. A working video feed does not count as VLOS, and a brief loss of sight is not a reportable safety event.

Visual observer UAG-02-059

Your visual observer has set up behind a storage shed, and from there she cannot see the drone when it works over the far side of the site. What does Part 107 require of you as remote PIC?

Show the answer

The answer is B: Make sure she is positioned where she can see the drone

When a VO is used, 107.33 requires the remote PIC to ensure the VO is able to see the aircraft in the manner 107.31 specifies, and AC 107-2A says the remote PIC can do this by specifying the VO's location. Watching a video feed is not unaided vision.

In-flight emergency UAG-02-099

A motor fails and you must put the drone down within seconds. You can reach either a crowded parking lot just below or an empty field slightly farther away. According to AC 107-2A, how should you take the emergency action?

Show the answer

The answer is A: Head for the empty field to keep injury and damage to a minimum

The emergency authority of 107.21 allows deviation only to the extent necessary, and AC 107-2A adds that emergency action should be taken in a way that minimizes injury or damage to property. If the field is reachable, it is the right choice.
